By Zoila Palma: The Caribbean Democrat Union (CDU) in partnership with the Conservatives Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) Programme and the Leadership Institute successfully hosted a Training Hub with the United Democratic Party (UDP) from Friday 16 January to Sunday 18 January, in Belize City, as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening democracy across the Caribbean.
The CDU noted that the 3-day intensive training brought together members of the UDP’s Party Leadership, Central Executive Committee, Standard Bearers, Caretakers, as well as Youth and Women representatives, all of whom demonstrated a high level of engagement and participation throughout the programme.
“This strong turnout and active involvement signal a serious commitment by the party to its renewal, rebuilding, and readiness to serve.
The training focused broadly on enhancing the UDP’s capacity to function as an effective Opposition -equipping participants with tools to hold government accountable, communicate effectively with the public, and position the party as a government-in-waiting. Emphasis was placed on strategic thinking, organizational strengthening, effective communication, and best practices drawn from the UK Westminster parliamentary model, which remains a global benchmark for democratic accountability and effective parliamentary opposition,” the CDU explained.
A notable component of the training was a session on the UDP’s constitutional review process, delivered by Senator Patrick Faber Chair of the Constitution Review Committee, which underscored the party’s efforts to modernize its internal governance.
“This process represents a critical step in deepening and strengthening the democratic principles, transparency, and accountability mechanisms within the United Democratic Party,” the CDU said.
Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Nick Francis, Caribbean Regional Coordinator for the Conservatives WFD Programme, noted:
“Political parties remain a critical component of Caribbean democracies. By engaging directly with stakeholders in this space, we are working to broaden democratic values and strengthen democratic institutions across our region.”
Leader of the Opposition and Political Leader of the UDP Tracy Panton, expressed her appreciation for the initiative, stating:
“I am deeply grateful to the Caribbean Democrat Union and the WFD for this timely and highly valuable training exercise. It will greatly support the UDP’s mission to rebuild, renew, and effectively represent the needs and interests of the Belizean people. I am confident that the knowledge and skills gained will be fully implemented as we position the UDP to provide good governance for our country.”
The CDU Training Hub in Belize City forms part of a wider regional effort to strengthen democratic culture by engaging with political parties as essential pillars of representative democracy.
