By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton indicated earlier this week that she met with Lord Micheal Ashcroft to discuss the proposed BTL Acquisition of SMART/SpeedNet.
Following that meeting, there has been much public commentary about the Leader of the Opposition’s judgement.
But Panton explained that, “Whether one admires Mr. Ashcroft or not, the reality is this: the Ashcroft Alliance is a strategic investor in Belize, facilitated over decades by both major political organizations, the PUP and the UDP, through policy decisions, legal frameworks, commercial arrangements, and regulatory outcomes.”
However, Prime Minister John Briceno also questioned Panton’s judgement.
“I think every leader has a responsibility to meet with anybody, especially in the business community or in any way. I think it’s their responsibility, not meeting on a yacht, no. It kind of makes you question the judgment. I think she could have better somewhere else but I think there’s nothing wrong with the opposition to be able to meet with Mr. Ashcroft or any investor in Belize,” the PM said.
