By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2025–2026 Premier League of Belize Closing Championship begins this weekend with three matches across the country, launching a new four‑month race toward the playoffs and the May Grand Final. While Opening Championship winners Verdes FC will not take the field until next weekend, the rest of the league wastes no time setting the tone for the new campaign.

The action starts Saturday night in Belmopan, where Belmopan FC host Napoles FC at 7:30 pm at the FFB Stadium. Both teams are looking to rebound from inconsistent Opening Championship performances, and the league’s first 90 minutes will offer an early glimpse of their offseason adjustments.

On Sunday, the league shifts to Belize City and Orange Walk for a pair of simultaneous matchups. At 3:30 pm, Progresso FC open their home schedule at the People’s Stadium against Capital Sport Club, who are competing under the Benque United FC franchise. Progresso, runners‑up in the Opening Championship, begin their quest to return to the final after falling 1–0 on aggregate to Verdes in December. Capital Sport Club, meanwhile, enter the season with renewed hopes.

At the Marion Jones Sports Complex, Port Layola FC welcome Wagiya SC at 4:00 pm. Port Layola, a playoff contender last season, aim to reassert themselves early, while Wagiya continue their rebuild with what they hope is a deeper roster and improved defensive options.

Verdes FC, the reigning champions, will not play this weekend. The Green Machine begin their title defense next Saturday, January 24, when they host Wagiya SC at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo.

The Closing Championship continues through April with 14 weeks of regular‑season action before the semifinals and Grand Final
