By Zoila Palma: Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, condemned what she described as “invasive aggression” by the United States on January 3, calling it “a stain on the relationship between the two countries.”
Speaking to Parliament on Thursday during the annual presentation of the executive’s performance, Rodríguez emphasized that Venezuela is a sovereign nation with the right to maintain diplomatic relations with countries including China, Russia, Iran, Cuba, and the United States.
She said her government has chosen a “diplomatic path” to address the conflict, El Pais reports.
Rodríguez dedicated much of her address to honoring Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores, who were captured during the U.S. operation, and to boosting the morale of the revolutionary movement.
She reaffirmed her commitment to the principles of Chavismo, the political ideology founded by former President Hugo Chávez, stating, “This work belongs to President Maduro” while presenting the government’s performance report. She also vowed to work toward the release of Maduro and Flores, calling for applause for Venezuelan and Cuban soldiers who died during clashes with U.S. forces.
In addition to addressing international relations, Rodríguez and her brother Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, emphasized a conciliatory approach toward the opposition.
They stressed the importance of political coexistence and indicated a willingness to work toward a more stable political climate, while warning opposition leaders not to mistake prosecutorial actions or efforts to ease tensions for weakness. “All of Venezuela is being threatened, and with sovereignty at stake, we will fight the diplomatic battle,” she said.
Rodríguez criticized U.S. diplomacy historically, highlighting Washington’s attempts to expand influence in Latin America, undermine independence, and exploit natural resources.
