By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 27-year-old Belize City man was fined $705 after his mother contacted police over his strange behavior at home, which led to the discovery of cocaine in his possession.
Luis Pinto, of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of possession of a controlled drug. Pinto was fined $700 plus $5 in court costs for having 0.7 grams of cocaine. He was given until March 31, 2026, to pay the fine, in default of which he will serve five months’ imprisonment.
The court heard that on Saturday, January 10, 2026, Pinto’s mother reported to police that she suspected her son was using drugs after he locked himself inside a room in their home and refused to open the door. She told police that between midnight and 4:00 a.m., Pinto had been behaving unusually, prompting her to seek police assistance.
Police later visited the North Creek residence and found Pinto home alone. Upon entering the house, officers’ attention was drawn to a kitchen shelf where they observed a transparent bag containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. Pinto was later found in the bathroom wearing sunglasses and was detained.
The suspected drugs and Pinto were taken to Precinct 3 Police Station, where the substance was weighed and confirmed to be 0.7 grams of cocaine. Pinto later pleaded guilty in court, bringing the matter to a close.
