By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) is warning the public about a measles outbreak in neighboring Guatemala amongst ongoing outbreaks in the Americas, including Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
As of January 13, 11 measles cases have been reported in the region, with one case in El Salvador and ten in Guatemala, mostly linked to travel to or residence in the southwestern town of Santiago Atitlán, Sololá. Cases have also been located in the Guatemala City area, Peten, and Izabal.
The Ministry advises individuals who have recently traveled to affected areas to contact their nearest health center or call the hotline at 0-800-MOH-CARE (0-800-664-2273) if they experience symptoms. Unvaccinated individuals are urged to visit their nearest health facility for vaccination or more information.
Measles symptoms include fever, runny nose, and red eyes, followed by a rash. The virus is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications. Vaccination is safe, effective, and provides lifelong immunity after two doses.
The public is advised to seek medical attention immediately if they develop fever and rash. The Ministry continues to monitor the situation and urges vigilance and protection against measles.
Belize recorded its first cases of measles since 1991 last year, when two teenagers who were part of a trip to Chihuahua, Mexico, contracted the disease.
