International News: Nicaragua bans tourists from bringing Bibles and printed materials

By Zoila Palma:  Tourists entering Nicaragua are now prohibited from carrying Bibles, newspapers, magazines, and books, as well as electronic devices such as drones and cameras, Christianpost reports.

Notices at Tica Bus terminals in Costa Rica and confirmed by regional transport representatives indicate the restrictions have been in place for more than six months, affecting travelers heading to Managua.

The ban is part of a broader list of prohibited items at the border and comes amid tightening controls on civil liberties and growing persecution of religious groups.

The move follows years of escalating restrictions on freedom of expression and religious activity in Nicaragua.

Since 2018, over 5,000 independent civil society organizations, including more than 1,300 religious groups, have had their legal status revoked.

Public religious events are restricted unless sanctioned by the government, and clergy have faced detention, surveillance, and mandatory check-ins.

Critics say the government has increasingly targeted the church, one of the few institutions openly critical of President Daniel Ortega’s administration.

Human rights organizations, including Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), have condemned the ban, warning it reflects Nicaragua’s efforts to control independent voices and limit access to information.

CSW documented 222 cases of religious persecution in 2024 alone, including detentions of 46 religious leaders.
