By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 35-year-old Belize City man is behind bars after pleading guilty to stealing his own mother’s cellphone, an offense that has landed him a one-year prison sentence.
Adrian Gordon, an unemployed resident of Neat & Clean Street, Belize City, appeared unrepresented on Friday morning before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #1. He was read a single charge of theft, to which he pleaded guilty. For his plea, Gordon was sentenced to one year imprisonment, effective immediately.
The charge arose from a complaint made by Gordon’s mother, who reported that on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, her son stole her green Samsung A25 cellphone valued at $1,500.
According to the facts presented in court, his mother said that around 8:00 a.m., she was at home preparing food when Gordon approached her and asked for $5.00. She told him she did not have any money, which reportedly caused him to become upset and disorderly.
She told police that she became fearful. While she was finishing combing her hair and preparing to leave the house for work, Gordon allegedly took the cellphone from out of her hand and ran out of the house with it.
Police later detained Gordon on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, and charged him with theft.
Court records show that this is Gordon’s fourth conviction for theft. His criminal history includes three previous theft convictions dating back to June 2022, when he was fined $2,000, as well as further convictions in August 2022, for which he was fined $500, and September 2022.
Given his guilty plea and prior record, the court imposed a custodial sentence, sending Gordon to prison for one year.
