By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 36-year-old construction worker from the Yarborough area is on remand at the Belize Central Prison following his arraignment for the theft of an elderly man’s cellphone from inside a parked vehicle in Belize City.

Isaac Burke appeared unrepresented on Friday before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he was read a single charge of theft. He is accused of dishonestly appropriating one Samsung A12 cellphone valued at $600, the property of an 81-year-old man. Burke pleaded not guilty to the charge.

With no objection from the prosecution, the court granted Burke bail in the sum of $800 with one surety of the same amount. Conditions attached to the bail include that Burke must not interfere with the virtual complainant, any members of his family, or any prosecution witnesses, and that he must remain at least 100 feet away from the complainant. However, when court adjourned for the day, Burke was unable to post bail and was consequently remanded to prison until February 23, 2026.

According to the facts of the case, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at about 4:17 p.m., the retired complainant of a Lords Bank Village, reported the theft at Precinct 1 Police Station. He told police that earlier that morning, around 10:30 a.m., he had parked his grey 2004 Nissan Frontier across from the Comex Paint Shop on Albert Street, Belize City, and entered the store to check on paint purchases.

Garbutt said that upon leaving the store, he realized his black Samsung A12 cellphone was missing. He returned to his vehicle but could not find it. After being informed that Comex Paint Shop had no surveillance cameras, Garbutt went next door to Midtown Grocery Shop, where he viewed camera footage that allegedly showed a medium-built man wearing a blue long-sleeve shirt reaching through the driver’s side window of his vehicle and removing the phone.

Garbutt stated that he did not give anyone permission to enter his vehicle or remove any items. Police later reviewed the footage and determined that the theft occurred between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. that day.

Police subsequently detained a suspect in the area. At about 3:33 p.m., Burke was escorted to Precinct 1 Police Station, where he was later charged in connection with the theft.
