By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Government of Belize received approximately 250,000 US Dollars in equipment and hardware from the Government of the United States of America as part of the new Biometric Data Sharing Partnership (BDSP).

Representatives of the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise, and the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan signed the official documents.

“This represents an important milestone in strengthening border management and international cooperation,” the Government of Belize noted.

Through this initiative, the Ministry of Immigration will strengthen surveillance at the country’s points of entry by incorporating fingerprint-based biometric technology.

The Government of Belize noted that once implemented, Belizean immigration officials will be able to conduct background checks on visitors by accessing the United States Department of Homeland Security’s identity database, one of the world’s largest biometric law enforcement datasets.
