By Zoila Palma: Dr. Osmond Martinez, Minister of State for the Ministry of Economic Transformation is conducting site visits to inspect sugar roads in the Corozal and Orange Walk districts.
The inspection is a key part of preparations for the upcoming 2026 sugarcane crop season and aims to ensure that critical roadways are capable of supporting cane farmers as they transport sugarcane to the mill.
Minister Martinez was accompanied by representatives from the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI), the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing (MIDH), American Sugar Refining / Belize Sugar Industries, Northern Sugar Cane Growers Association (NSCGA), the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association (PSCGA), the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) and the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association (CSCPA).
The team assessed priority areas requiring repair and reviewed ongoing infrastructure works currently being undertaken by MIDH.
This joint effort highlights Government’s continued commitment, alongside industry stakeholders, to strengthening the sugar industry and safeguarding the livelihoods of sugarcane farmers in the north.
