By Aaron Humes: Police say two Guatemalan nationals – Nestor Amilcar Torres Galdamez, 50, and Romulo Eduardo Velasquez Galdamez, 30 – were arrested and charged with possession of prohibited ammunition in Benque Viejo Town on Friday.
At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Friday, a joint Police/Customs operation intercepted a black Toyota Hilux on Mollejon Road after receiving actionable intelligence. During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers discovered an empty extended magazine and a loaded magazine containing fourteen live rounds of .40 caliber ammunition.
According to police reports, the suspects claimed they had forgotten the magazines in the vehicle and presented a valid firearm license for a .40 caliber weapon issued in Guatemala. They also stated that their trips to Belize were primarily for the purpose of purchasing poultry for resale back in Guatemala.
In addition to the criminal charges, customs officials have taken custody of the Toyota Hilux and are expected to pursue separate charges related to the vehicle’s failure to be declared at the port of entry.
Investigations continue, and further charges are pending.
