By Aaron Humes: In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, which claimed over 100 lives in Jamaica in late October, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has dispatched its second team of Power Line Technicians to assist with ongoing power restoration efforts on the island. This team departed Belize on Sunday, January 4, and is set to work alongside Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS), the sole electricity distributor in Jamaica.
The team, under the leadership of Technical Supervisor Jeremy Jex, comprises skilled technicians Gregory Kerr, Brian Gentle, Emry Gill, Owen Nolberto, Paul McCalla, and Andres Catch. Their mission is to restore electricity to the communities still affected by the aftermath of the devastating storm.
As of now, approximately 10 percent of Jamaican customers remain without power, down significantly from a staggering 77 percent recorded immediately after the storm. This progress highlights the urgent need for continued support and collaboration in restoring essential services.
BEL’s commitment to assisting Jamaica follows the deployment of its first team in November 2025. The technicians will collaborate with other regional crews from the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC), pooling expertise to expedite the restoration process.
