By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old mother of three has avoided jail time after pleading guilty to possession of utensils used for smoking crack cocaine, telling the court she was “at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Leiyana Whylie, a housekeeper of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1, where she answered to a single charge of possession of utensils for smoking a controlled drug, to wit, crack cocaine. Whylie pleaded guilty with an explanation and asked the court for leniency.

Whylie told the court that she had gone to visit a friend on the day in question and was talking when police arrived and said they found her with a crack pipe. She admitted taking responsibility for the pipe, which she said was found on a mattress.

In mitigation, Whylie explained that she recently lost two uncles and is currently in a custody battle with the Human Services Department, which has taken her three children—ages 8, 6, and 2—into care. She told the court she is trying hard to regain custody of her children and recently secured employment.

For her guilty plea, the Chief Magistrate imposed a fine of $300 plus $5 court costs, totaling $305. Whylie was given until March 31, 2026, to pay the fine, in default of which she will serve three months’ imprisonment.

The court was informed that Whylie had a previous matter for possession of a controlled drug before the Independence Court, which was struck out after she failed to appear.

According to police reports, at about 10:50 a.m., officers were conducting checks at an abandoned house through an alley off King Street when they observed two females—one lying on a mattress and the other sitting on a chair. Police said one of the women threw a pipe onto the mattress and blew smoke from her mouth upon officers identifying themselves.

The pipe was examined and police observed what appeared to be a white substance suspected to be crack cocaine inside. Whylie was escorted to Precinct 1 Police Station on King Street, where the pipe was measured in her presence and found to be approximately 4¼ inches in length.
