By Zoila Palma:  Cuba said Sunday that 32 of its military and police officers were killed during a U.S. military operation in Venezuela, marking the first official death toll released by Havana following the American strikes.

In a statement read on Cuban state television, the government said the officers were deployed in Venezuela at the request of Caracas, though it did not specify their exact mission. Cuba, a long-time ally of Venezuela, has for years sent security personnel to assist the government.

U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged Cuban casualties while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, saying there had been “a lot of death on the other side” but none among U.S. forces, AP reports.

The U.S. operation on Saturday resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were taken to the United States to face charges related to an alleged narco-terrorism conspiracy.

Venezuelan authorities have confirmed that fatalities occurred during the strikes but have not provided a specific death toll.

Cuba announced two days of national mourning for the fallen officers, with President Miguel Díaz-Canel and former leader Raúl Castro offering condolences to their families.
