Leader of the Opposition urges commitment to peace with rising global tensions after U.S.’s Venezuela action

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Tracey Taegar-Panton has reiterated the nation’s steadfast commitment to diplomacy, multilateralism, and the principles of international law in the face of escalating global conflicts. With tensions rising around the world, particularly in relation to the ongoing situation in Venezuela, she has called for a collective effort to uphold the established norms of peace and sovereignty.

Panton said, “This Hemisphere has historically been recognized as a Zone of Peace, anchored in respect for sovereignty, non-intervention, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. These principles are not aspirational, they are enshrined in international law and regional commitments. These principles are being tested by the resurgence of raw power politics, driven by greed and the pursuit of strategic dominance.”

Turning to the Venezuela issue, she declared, “The decision to invade Venezuela cannot credibly be framed as an act in defense of democracy or human rights. Such actions undermine the very values they purport to advance. The reality is that economic and strategic interests, particularly access to vast natural resources, shaped this decision.

“Small states in our region are especially vulnerable in such moments, which is why we must remain steadfast in defending multilateralism, international law, and good-faith dialogue. Belize has always and must continue to advocate for restraint, diplomacy, and principled leadership, fully aware that silence, in the face of injustice, is never neutral,” Panton emphasized.

Panton’s vocal declaration is in contrast to the silence thus far from the Government of Belize and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
