By Zoila Palma: At least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured after Mexico’s Interoceanic Train derailed on Sunday in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexican authorities said.
The Mexican Navy reported that about 250 passengers were on board the train when it left the tracks in the municipality of Asunción Ixtaltepec, along the main line connecting the port cities of Veracruz and Salina Cruz.
In a statement, the navy said 36 people were taken to hospitals for treatment, while the remaining injured passengers suffered minor wounds.
According to CNN, hundreds of naval personnel, along with rescue vehicles and emergency responders, were deployed to the scene to assist passengers and secure the area.
Images from the site showed Mexican Army soldiers and civil protection teams helping evacuate survivors from the damaged rail cars.
Mexico’s Attorney General Ernestina Godoy said an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the derailment.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had instructed senior officials from the Navy and the Interior Ministry to travel to the site and provide direct support to victims’ families.
