By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 24-year-old Belize City fisherman has walked free after a charge of handling stolen goods was withdrawn when the robbery victim chose forgiveness over prosecution.

Jermaine Bernardez, of Jasmine Street, appeared in Court #6 before Mannon Dennison, where he was arraigned on a single charge of handling stolen goods. Bernardez was accused of dishonestly assisting in the retention of a diamond-encrusted Cuban Link bracelet valued at $5,000.

Bernardez pleaded not guilty. However, the virtual complainant took the stand and requested that the charge be withdrawn.

“I just wanted to retrieve my items, and I did so,” the owner told the court. When questioned by the magistrate, Myers confirmed that he was not threatened or pressured and said the decision was made of his own free will. He added that he later discovered Bernardez is a relative, a fact he was unaware of at the time of the incident.

Magistrate Dennison remarked that it was “a small world” and noted the complainant’s forgiving heart before striking out the charge for want of prosecution and ordering that Bernardez be freed.

The charge stemmed from a gunpoint robbery reported on Thursday, December 18, 2025, when the complainant told police that around 4:00 p.m., he was standing on Pickstock Street near New Road when two men exited a white Ford Explorer. One reportedly pulled a firearm and demanded his belongings.

Myers said he handed over items totaling $18,500, including a $2,000 iPhone 14, a $10,000 14-karat gold Cuban Link medal, a 14-karat bracelet valued at $6,000, a set of Nissan Rogue keys valued at $500, and $900 in cash.

Police investigations later led to the detention of Bernardez, who was allegedly found in possession of the $5,000 Cuban Link bracelet, resulting in the handling charge that has now been withdrawn.
