By Zoila Palma: The Belize Defence Force has extended congratulations to Major Megan Aspinall on receiving the International Student Award for Academic Excellence and the successful completion of her studies at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California, United States.
The BDF noted that about 18 months ago, Major Aspinall was awarded a scholarship to pursue graduate studies at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
She has now successfully completed a demanding course of study, earning a Master’s degree in Policy and Strategy.
In addition, Major Aspinall was enrolled in a second program, becoming the first Belizean officer to attend the Marine Corps University Command and Staff College, where she earned a Diploma in Professional Military Education.
Her master’s thesis, The Role of Free Trade Zones as an Enabler for Organized Crime: A Collective Study of Belize, Guatemala, and Panama, reflects scholarly excellence and contributes directly to the understanding of contemporary security challenges relevant to Belize and the wider region.
“Beyond her academic achievements, Major Aspinall’s leadership and service were formally recognized throughout her time at the Naval Postgraduate School and within the Monterey community. She served as Vice President of the African Discussion Club, facilitating monthly discussions that provided first hand regional perspectives to United States military students preparing for deployments abroad. She also served as Treasurer on the International Committee, which organized events for international students and supported their transition to life in the United States by fostering a strong sense of community and mutual support,” the BDF noted.
Major Aspinall also completed over 120 hours of volunteer service at the Thomas Carman Food Pantry at the Epiphany Lutheran and Episcopal Church, assisting families in need as part of ongoing community outreach efforts.
The Belize Defence Force commends Major Aspinall for exemplifying academic excellence, leadership, and service, and for representing Belize with distinction at the international level.
