By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Douglas Village farmer is in police custody after he was caught driving under the influence on Christmas evening in the Orange Walk District.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 25, officers were conducting mobile patrols in San Jose Village when they observed a gray Mazda pickup, bearing license plate C-08580, swerving dangerously across the highway.
The patrol team immediately activated their sirens and intercepted the vehicle. Upon approaching the driver, identified as 47-year-old Elvis Mendez, officers noted a strong aroma of alcohol on his breath and observed that his speech was heavily slurred.
Mendez was cautioned and escorted to the Trial Farm Police Sub-Station. Due to his high level of intoxication, he was unable to sign the acknowledgement form regarding his constitutional rights.
Mendez agreed to provide a urine sample for analysis. The sample was split and sealed in his presence according to standard procedure. He remains detained pending formal charges for driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of drinks or drugs.
The vehicle has since been impounded at the Trial Farm Police Sub-Station.
