By Zoila Palma:  Panama’s foreign minister said on Monday that a tanker intercepted by the United States while sailing under the Panamanian flag violated the country’s maritime regulations after switching off its transponder while departing Venezuelan waters with a cargo of crude oil.

Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha told local television that the vessel failed to comply with Panama’s maritime rules, adding that authorities would take appropriate measures following an investigation.

He did not provide further details on the specific actions being considered.

Reuters reported that the vessel identified as the supertanker Centuries, was targeted by the U.S. Coast Guard on Saturday after leaving Venezuela.

Under international maritime practice, a country that grants its flag to a vessel may revoke its registration if it is found to have breached maritime regulations, including safety and tracking requirements.
