By Zoila Palma: Last week, Minister of Home Affairs and Enterprise Oscar Mira conducted an introductory tour of key units and sections within the National Forensic Science Service (NFSS), one of two government departments under his ministry.
The tour included visits to the Medical Examiner’s Office, encompassing the autopsy facility at the CAHSU morgue and the Histopathology section at the Forensic Laboratory, as well as the Scenes of Crime Headquarters in Belize City, the only such unit operating 24 hours a day, year-round.
Minister Mira also visited the Forensic Laboratory in Ladyville, where he was briefed on the work of several specialized sections, including Serology, Toxicology, Analytical Chemistry, Rapid DNA, Firearms Examination, the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS), Evidence Management, and Administration.
These facilities play a critical role in supporting criminal investigations and medicolegal death inquiries nationwide.
With 11 office locations across the country and a staff complement of 70 public officers, the NFSS provides forensic science and forensic medicine services throughout Belize.
During the tour, the minister received an overview of how these services support law enforcement and the justice system, while forensic experts highlighted ongoing improvements and shared recommendations on strengthening forensic operations.
Discussions also focused on how greater reliance on forensic evidence and intelligence could enhance efforts to combat organized crime.
