By Aaron Humes: The Office of the Prime Minister has just announced that, at the advice of Prime Minister John Briceño, His Excellency, Deputy Governor-General Ambassador Stuart Leslie, acting for Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam, will appoint Rear Admiral Elton Bennett, Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard, as Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise, pursuant to section 107 of the Constitution.

A short statement notes, “Commandant Bennett has served the nation with distinction for three decades, and took command of the Belize Coast Guard in 2019. It is anticipated that his appointment will greatly enhance and advance the work of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise.”

Several individuals were in the running for the post, including former Police Commissioner Chester Williams and current Deputy Commissioner Bart Jones, as well as former Deputy Commissioner and Special Advisor Aaron Guzman.

Minister Oscar Mira says change was necessary to restore confidence in the Police and enhance their investigative capabilities.

No word was given on who succeeds Admiral Bennett at the Coast Guard but Lieutenant Gregory Soberanis is next in line.
