By Breaking Belize News Staff: Sisters Janiece Shanice Augustine and Janiene Justine Augustine have been assigned attorneys by the State as their arson case proceeds in the High Court.

The two sisters reappeared before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, where the court was informed that 22-year-old Janiece Shanice Augustine, a call center agent, will be represented by Attorney Mendez. Her older sister, 26-year-old Janiene Justine Augustine, a hair braider, will be represented by Attorney David McKoy.

The sisters narrowly avoided having their bail revoked after arriving almost an hour late for their court hearing. With legal representation now in place, Justice Pilgrim set their Case Management Conference (CMC) for February 13, 2026. Their bail, in the sum of $8,000 each, was further extended until that date.

The Augustine sisters were first arraigned on Friday, April 12, 2024, in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a single charge of arson. It is alleged that on July 16, 2022, in Crooked Tree, they unlawfully and dangerously set fire to a blue wooden structure valued at $30,000, along with $2,000 in household items, causing total losses of $32,000. The property reportedly belongs to Icelma Crawford.

No plea was taken at the time, and with no objection to bail, the Senior Magistrate granted each sister bail in the sum of $8,000 with two sureties of $4,000 each, which they met. On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the sisters were committed to stand trial in the High Court for the arson charge.
