International News: Australia to tighten gun laws after Bondi beach Hanukkah massacre

By Zoila Palma:  Australian leaders have pledged to overhaul the country’s gun laws following a mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left at least 15 people dead and dozens injured.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as an act of antisemitic terrorism and said the government was prepared to take whatever action is necessary, including tougher firearms restrictions, amid growing concern over rising antisemitic violence.

Proposed measures include limiting the number of guns an individual can own and conducting regular reviews of firearm licenses, AP reports.

The changes would mark a significant update to Australia’s landmark national firearms agreement, introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which effectively banned rapid-fire rifles. Authorities said the shooting occurred as thousands gathered at Bondi Beach, including families attending the “Chanukah by the Sea” event celebrating the Jewish festival.

Police shot two suspected gunmen, identified as a father and son. The 50-year-old father died at the scene, while his 24-year-old son remained in a coma in hospital.

At least 38 other people were hospitalized, including a man who was injured while tackling and disarming one of the attackers.
