By Aaron Humes: A devastating incident unfolded yesterday at Brown University when a gunman opened fire inside a classroom, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuring nine others. The shooting took place during a final exam review session for an economics class, sending shockwaves throughout the campus and the broader community, the New York Times reports.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the assailant, masked and armed with a rifle, entered the lecture hall and began firing indiscriminately. Joseph Oduro, the teaching assistant leading the review session, described a harrowing scene as the gunman, wearing a mask and carrying a rifle, burst into the lecture hall. The man shouted something Oduro could not make out and started shooting, he said, describing how he hid behind a desk with some students.
Following the attack, the gunman fled onto the streets of Providence, prompting a massive manhunt. Hundreds of police officers scoured the area, searching alleyways and parked vehicles throughout the night. In a late development, law enforcement confirmed that a person of interest has been detained in connection with the incident.
As the situation unfolded, the university implemented a lockdown, which was lifted early this morning. Police escorted frightened students and staff out of campus buildings as they sought shelter in an athletic center. The atmosphere was tense, with many students grappling with the trauma of the event.
Two Brown students caught up in this incident had previously survived school shootings at other locations. The Brown University community is in mourning, and counseling services have been made available to those affected by the incident. The university released a statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students.
