Press Release
The Department of the Environment (DOE), within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, in collaboration with the Placencia and Seine Bight Village Councils, is advancing a key initiative to address the escalating issue of coastal erosion along the Placencia Peninsula. This effort underscores the Ministry’s and the DOE’s continued commitment to safeguarding vulnerable coastal communities and strengthening national climate resilience.
The Placencia Peninsula has experienced ongoing land loss, damage to beachfront properties, and increasing concern among residents and investors due to persistent shoreline erosion. To date, no comprehensive scientific assessment has been conducted to define the full extent of the erosion or identify its underlying causes. To address this critical gap, the DOE is supporting the engagement of Community and Practice, a consultancy firm, and the University of South Florida to undertake the study entitled, “Technical Approach for Shoreline Recovery and Shore Stabilization for the Placencia Peninsula, Stann Creek District.” The study aims to establish a clear understanding of the coastal system and erosion processes, determine the causes, scale, and severity of shoreline change, identify suitable sand sources to support restoration efforts, and recommend feasible, science-based engineering interventions to protect coastal infrastructure.
The results of this study will provide essential guidance to agencies and local authorities that are necessary to strengthen engineering, planning, and coastal management decisions across the peninsula. By guiding smarter planning and coastal management decisions, this initiative supports sustainable development while safeguarding the livelihoods, properties, and natural resources that residents depend on. This initiative also aligns with Goal 11.1 of the DOE’s National Environmental Strategy Policy and Action Plan, which aims to enhance community resilience by promoting proactive Disaster Risk Management measures by 2026.
Through this investment and collaborative approach, the DOE reaffirms its dedication to protecting Belize’s coastal communities and supporting sustainable, climate-resilient development.
