By Zoila Palma: Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Belize have formalized a new partnership aimed at strengthening science-based conservation and community engagement in Belize’s renowned flats fishery.

The Memorandum of Understanding, signed during BTT’s 8th International Science Symposium, outlines joint efforts in research, education, and capacity building to support the country’s coastal ecosystems.

WCS-Belize Marine Conservation Director Ralna Lewis said the collaboration reflects a “shared commitment to safeguarding coastal ecosystems, protecting critical species, and ensuring conservation is guided by science and collaboration.”

Leaders from both organizations emphasized the alignment of their missions and the value of uniting expertise to support both biodiversity and local livelihoods.

BTT President & CEO Jim McDuffie noted the partnership comes at an ideal moment, highlighting WCS-Belize’s “stellar outreach and engagement efforts” and expressing hope that the collaboration will benefit fishing communities, guides, and the wider coastal sector.

The agreement outlines cooperation in habitat research for species such as bonefish, tarpon, and permit, along with expanded education, advocacy, and community-driven conservation initiatives.

A central feature of the MOU is its focus on strengthening Belizean fisheries through training and professional development, including opportunities aimed at empowering women in both commercial and recreational fishing.

BTT’s Vice President for Conservation and Public Policy, Kellie Ralston, said formalizing the relationship underscores the “power of shared science” and the importance of fishers and their families in achieving conservation success.

WCS Belize Program Director Nicole Auil Gomez welcomed the partnership, noting its potential to enhance stewardship in key marine protected areas such as South Water Caye and Glover’s Reef.
