International News: Venezuela revokes Airline permits as regional tensions escalate in the Caribbean

By Zoila Palma:  Venezuela has withdrawn operating permits for 6 major international airlines after they failed to meet a 48-hour deadline to resume suspended flights to Caracas, escalating tensions amid growing regional security concerns.

The carriers—Iberia, TAP, Turkish Airlines, Avianca, Latam Colombia, and Gol—halted service after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration warned commercial operators to exercise extreme caution over Venezuelan airspace and the southern Caribbean.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello defended the government’s response, saying the country would “keep its dignity” and asserting Venezuela’s sovereign authority to decide which airlines may operate in its territory.

The suspension has left travelers scrambling for alternatives as only a limited number of carriers continue regular service, including Copa, Wingo, Boliviana de Aviación, Satena, and local airlines Avior and Conviasa, euronews reports.

The flight disruption comes as U.S. military activity in the Caribbean intensifies under Operation Southern Spear, launched to counter drug trafficking.

This week, the U.S. Air Force confirmed that B-52H bombers conducted strike demonstrations in the region, while two Dominican airports—San Isidro Air Base and Las Américas International Airport—will temporarily support anti-narcotics operations.

Venezuelan officials are urging calm amid rising geopolitical tension.
