By Zoila Palma: Mexican authorities on Friday arrested seven bodyguards suspected of involvement in the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, who was killed during Day of the Dead festivities on November 1.
State and federal agents detained the suspects near the very spot where the popular mayor was gunned down, prompting immediate questions about the role of his own security team, AP reports.
The Michoacan state prosecutor’s office later confirmed that seven public officials were taken into custody for their “likely participation in aggravated homicide.”
The arrests follow growing suspicion surrounding Manzo’s security detail, which failed to stop the teenage gunman who shot the mayor and then reportedly killed the assailant after he had already been subdued.
Earlier in the week, police also announced the capture of a man accused of planning and ordering the hit, linking the conspiracy to the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Manzo’s wife has since been sworn in as Uruapan’s mayor, as city staff watched Friday’s arrests—some in tears—as members of the late mayor’s inner circle were led away by soldiers and National Guard officers.
The killing has intensified pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum to strengthen her security strategy in regions plagued by organized crime. In response, the administration unveiled “Plan Michoacan,” a new initiative combining expanded social programs with the deployment of 10,000 troops across the state.
