By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote today on a Senate-passed bill to reopen the federal government after 43 days of shutdown, the longest in American history.
The measure, supported by both Republicans and Democrats, aims to fund most federal operations through January. But the standoff over expiring healthcare subsidies and delayed federal salaries has crippled key U.S. agencies, including those overseeing air traffic control and airport security.
Over the past week, major airports across the United States, including Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Atlanta, have faced severe staff shortages, grounding or delaying flights. These airports are critical connection hubs for Belize-bound travelers.
Tour operators and hotel owners in Belize say the shutdown has already begun affecting their bottom line.
“Several guests from the U.S. have canceled or rescheduled because of flight delays and confusion,” said one San Ignacio resort manager. “It’s not peak season yet, but this is when bookings start rolling in, and they’ve slowed down.”
With over 70% of Belize’s tourists arriving from the U.S., the shutdown threatens to undercut an already fragile post-pandemic recovery. The Belize Tourism Board has encouraged visitors to check flight statuses frequently and book flexible fares.
If the shutdown continues, analysts warn it could cause a short-term dip in arrivals and revenue, just as Belize enters its high tourism season.
