By Aaron Humes: Following today’s Cabinet meeting in Belmopan, Prime Minister John Briceño issued a video address to the Nation, marking the fifth anniversary of his government and confirming changes in the Cabinet.
“We also know that everyday expectations rise, and new challenges emerge,” the Prime Minister began this portion of his six-minute-and-a-half statement, continuing, “and so, mindful of this week’s election anniversary, I have decided, after careful reflection, to address various Cabinet portfolio assignments.”
Briceño also announced the ‘immediate’ formation of a Cabinet Special Committee on Cost of Living Issues, which he will chair and whose membership includes Ministers Oscar Requeña, Francis Fonseca, Jose Abelardo Mai, Kevin Bernard, Anthony Mahler, and Thea Garcia-Ramirez and their respective Chief Executive Officers.
“Aside from coordinating organic initiatives to address affordability, this Special Committee will specifically examine the impacts of major Government polices across Government, so as to protect the purchasing power of the working and middle class,” the Prime Minister elaborated.
Per the P.M.’s rundown and as we have previously reported, Francis Fonseca adds Education once again to his already weighty portfolios of Foreign Affairs and Culture, while losing Immigration to Kareem Musa, who in turn drops Home Affairs and New Growth Industries.
The former goes to Henry Charles Usher, who also gains the Ministry of Enterprise, responsible for Free Zones, from Jose Abelardo Mai, who retains Agriculture, Food Security (including Supplies Control), and adds New Growth Industries.
Musa adds Governance and Labour from Usher and Florencio Marin Jr., who gains Public Service and Disaster Risk Management from Usher.
Oscar Requeña returns to his familiar portfolios of Rural Transformation, Local Government, and Community Development.
“These adjustments,” the P.M. assured, “will as a whole strengthen our Executive team, while bringing a fresh approach to several difficult spheres of governance. For example, despite the massive deployments of human and financial resources and the adoption of cutting-edge strategies, both education and citizen security remain areas of keen concern by the public. In both instances though, the Cabinet and the Ministries are more resolved than ever to build on the successes of the past five years. We are undeterred by the transnational influences that render advancement sporadic or incremental.”
