By Aaron Humes: The Right Reverend Philip S. Wright, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Belize, has been elected Archbishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies during the Provincial Synod held on Monday.
Bishop Wright becomes just the second cleric from Belize, dating back to when it was known as British Honduras, to ascend to this prestigious position, following Bishop Edward Arthur Dunn from 1936 to 1943, and the first native-born Belizean to accede to high priestly rank.
Bishop Wright has been serving as the Bishop of Belize since his consecration in November 2005. He is concurrently President of the Belize Council of Churches, one of the two main umbrella religious organizations in Belize, as opposed to the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB).
The Diocese of Belize, along with Anglicans across the Caribbean, expressed gratitude and support for Archbishop-elect Wright as he prepares to undertake his new sacred responsibilities.
