By Breaking Belize News Staff: An interdicted police officer accused of punching his ex-common-law wife in the face has walked free after the complainant told the court she no longer wished to proceed with the case.

Police Constable Winfield Emmanuel Mortis, 35, who is currently on interdiction from the Belize Police Department and last attached to the San Pedro Formation, had been charged with common assault following an altercation with his ex, a Belize City fisherwoman.

When the case was called before a Senior Magistrate in Court #6, the woman informed the court that she did not want to continue with the matter. The prosecutor, a police corporal, questioned whether she had been threatened or coerced into withdrawing the charge, but she insisted she was acting of her own free will.

As a result, the Senior Magistrate withdrew the charge, but not before issuing a stern warning to Mortis. “Take it as a second opportunity,” she told him. “You need to learn self-control and learn to walk away.”

The incident reportedly occurred around 9:15 a.m. on November 10, 2025, when the woman said Mortis confronted her at the corner of Vernon Street and East Collet Canal. She claimed that during an argument, Mortis grabbed her arm and punched her in the face, causing her nose to bleed.

The woman later made a report to the Gender-Based Violence Response and Investigation Division, but she did not obtain a medical examination, leaving her injuries unclassified.

According to police reports, Mortis and the woman had been together for over 13 years before he was jailed on a murder charge. While he was behind bars, White began a new relationship. After Mortis was released on bail earlier this year, tensions reportedly reignited between the two.

Despite the serious allegations, Mortis is now free of the assault charge—but left the courtroom with a warning to control his temper and avoid future trouble.
