By Zoila Palma: The Caribbean Poultry Association (CPA) is intensifying efforts to expand and diversify the regional poultry industry. During its 46th Meeting on October 9, 2025, Chairman Hamant Mahabir and the Board of Directors reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advancing food and nutrition security across CARICOM. As part of its Strategic Plan, the CPA aims to boost broiler meat production by 200,000 tonnes by 2045.

The association recorded a 3% growth in 2024 and projects a further 5% increase in 2025, with total annual output expected to reach 340,000 tonnes—covering 80% of CARICOM’s poultry consumption. These gains continue to benefit stakeholders across the industry, including producers, feed suppliers, and value-added processors.

The CPA Board also commended the successful staging of the Eighth International Technical Symposium and Exhibition, held in Jamaica from May 13–15, 2025. The event attracted more than 200 delegates from across the region and abroad, receiving high praise for its technical sessions on innovation in poultry production. These symposia, along with targeted training programs, updated farming guidelines, and strengthened digital outreach, have enhanced the CPA’s engagement with stakeholders.

The organization continues to advocate for supportive policies and a robust regulatory framework that aligns with the evolving agricultural landscape.

A major highlight of 2025 was the presentation of an independent study by Ernst and Young Services Limited on the socio-economic impact of Jamaica’s poultry industry. Commissioned by the CPA, the study found that the sector supports about 392,000 jobs, contributes J$62.6 billion in wages, and generates a total economic impact of J$300 billion. Notably, every 1% increase in broiler production was shown to raise GDP per capita by 2.6%. Based on these findings, CARICOM’s Ministers of Agriculture have endorsed similar studies across other Member States, emphasizing the importance of regional standards for poultry products to ensure food safety and quality.

Despite challenges such as import competition, supply chain disruptions, and rising operational costs, the CPA remains steadfast in meeting the goals set under the CARICOM “25 by 2025+5” Initiative.

Member countries continue to make progress: Barbados has commissioned a new feed mill, Belize remains self-sufficient in grain and poultry, Guyana has expanded soybean and egg production, Jamaica has increased processing capacity with a new Air Chill plant, Suriname is advancing climate-controlled housing, and Trinidad and Tobago has invested in modern feed mills and broiler housing.

Celebrating 25 years of service, the CPA stands as a cornerstone of regional agro-industry development—ensuring poultry remains the most affordable and widely consumed source of animal protein in the Caribbean.
