Press Release

The Forest Department of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management has detained and charged four individuals for unlawful possession of forest produce following an illegal logging report in the Doubloon Lagoon, Orange Walk District.

On November 5, 2025, the Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative (CSFI) Enforcement Team encountered four individuals in the vicinity of Doubloon Lagoon unloading forest posts from a red tractor bearing license plate CZL-A-5398 into a white GMC truck with license plate OW-A-5663. Upon request, they failed to produce a valid forest permit or license authorizing the extraction and transport of the forest produce.

The team impounded the vehicles, a chainsaw, a tractor battery, and approximately 100 logwood posts as evidence.  The four individuals, Martin Rosado, Diego Santos, Chad Vargas, and Aldair Correa, have been charged under Section 19 of the Forest Act, Chapter 213, for “Unlawful Possession of Forest Produce.” The impounded items remain in the Forest Department’s custody pending court proceedings.

The Forest Department extends appreciation to the Corozal Sustainable Future Initiative (CSFI) and the Belize Police Department for their vigilance, integrity, and continued collaboration in protecting Belize’s forest resources.

The public is reminded that harvesting, transporting, or possessing forest produce without the necessary permits is a criminal offense. Members of the public are encouraged to report any illegal activities to the Forest Department Hotline at 610-1524. Collective action is vital to safeguarding Belize’s forests for future generations.
