By Zoila Palma: The Miss Universe Organization is facing intense scrutiny following a viral incident in which Miss Universe Mexico, Fátima Bosch, was publicly humiliated during a pre-sash ceremony in Thailand.
The confrontation, livestreamed on November 4, showed Thai businessman Nawat Itsaragrisil — president of Miss Grand International and a vice president within the Miss Universe Organization — calling Bosch “dumb” and ordering security to remove her from the event.
The incident sparked outrage across social media, with many viewers condemning the treatment of the 25-year-old contestant, USA Today reports.
In the video, Itsaragrisil accused Bosch of failing to fulfill certain promotional obligations for the competition and mocked her when she tried to explain. “If you follow the orders from your national director, you are a dumb head,” he declared, before calling security to remove Bosch, despite audible protests from other contestants.
Miss Universe Denmark and several others appeared to walk out in solidarity. Bosch later responded in Spanish, saying she was not afraid to speak out and was determined to be a voice for women who fight for causes. “I’m not a doll to be made up and styled,” she said. “I came here to be a voice for all the women and girls who fight for what they believe in.”
The Miss Universe Organization swiftly issued a statement and video response on the same day, with President Raúl Rocha Cantú condemning Itsaragrisil’s behavior as “malicious” and “disrespectful.”
Cantú said he was “greatly indignant” over the “public aggression” against Bosch and accused Itsaragrisil of attempting “to intimidate a defenseless woman” and silence her. The organization emphasized that it stands firmly with Bosch and all women who face mistreatment or intimidation.
Following the backlash, Itsaragrisil took to TikTok to issue a partial apology, saying, “If anyone was not feeling good or comfortable, I do apologize.” He claimed there may have been miscommunication regarding contestants’ promotional expectations. However, his remarks have done little to quell criticism, as pageant fans and women’s rights advocates continue to call for accountability within the Miss Universe Organization ahead of its 74th annual competition.
