By Aaron Humes: A traffic accident occurred this evening, Tuesday, resulting in the death of a 67-year-old man. The incident took place around 8:00 PM along the main road leading out of the village of Santa Martha, Orange Walk District, along the Old Northern Highway.
Police report that a 2007 Mack CPT 700 dump truck, bearing the license plate OW A-03809, was reported to have been parked on the side of the road earlier in the evening. The driver, 36-year-old Nelson Pech, left the vehicle momentarily to go to the village chairman’s house before returning shortly thereafter.
Upon starting the truck and moving forward slowly, Pech noticed his brother waving at him in the rear-view mirror. In an unfortunate turn of events, he stopped the vehicle only to discover that he had run over a man, later identified as Julio Flora, a resident of the village.
The body of Flora was lying face down on the roadway with visible injuries, including swelling, bleeding from the nose, and multiple cut wounds on both forearms.
The body of Julio Flora was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital Morgue, where Dr. Jair Osorio officially pronounced him dead at 9:58 PM. A post-mortem examination is pending, while the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues.
