By Zoila Palma: Thirteen suspected members of a Mexican drug cartel were killed on Monday during a fierce gun battle with police in the violence-plagued state of Sinaloa, authorities confirmed.
Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said that four suspects were arrested and nine kidnapped victims were rescued following the clash in the municipality of Guasave.
According to officials, security personnel came under fire from gunmen hiding beneath a bridge, prompting a heavy exchange of gunfire.
Officers later seized seven vehicles, high-powered firearms, and tactical equipment at the scene, CBS reports.
The confrontation is the latest episode in a prolonged wave of violence sweeping Sinaloa, where rival factions of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel have been locked in an internal war for more than a year.
The fighting has left over 1,700 people dead—including 57 minors—and nearly 2,000 missing, according to official estimates.
The conflict erupted following the July 2024 capture and extradition of cartel leader Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, allegedly betrayed by a son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
The rivalry between Zambada’s loyalists and the faction known as “Los Chapitos,” led by Guzmán’s sons, has become increasingly gruesome.
U.S. authorities have accused the Chapitos of using torture methods including electrocution and feeding victims to tigers.
