By Zoila Palma: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to deliver justice following the assassination of Uruapan’s mayor, Carlos Manzo, an outspoken critic of organized crime who had repeatedly warned about threats to his life, CNN reports.
Manzo, 40, was gunned down on Saturday night while attending a Day of the Dead candlelight festival in the city’s central square.
Police confirmed that two suspects were arrested and a third killed in connection with the attack. In response, Sheinbaum convened an emergency meeting of her security cabinet on Sunday and denounced the killing as a “vile act,” pledging “zero impunity and full justice.”
Manzo, one of Mexico’s few independent mayors, had served in office since September 2024 and was known for his vocal criticism of criminal groups operating in Michoacan.
Frequently seen wearing a bulletproof vest, he had called on the federal government for stronger security measures and warned that officials who refused to cooperate with cartels faced deadly consequences.
Uruapan, the heart of Mexico’s lucrative avocado industry, has become a flashpoint for violence as organized crime groups fight for control over the trade. In recent interviews, Manzo expressed frustration with federal inaction, saying, “I don’t want to be just another mayor on the list of those executed.”
Security Minister Omar Harfuch said Manzo had been under federal protection since late 2024, including 14 National Guard officers assigned to his security detail.
“The aggressors took advantage of the vulnerability of a public event,” Harfuch told reporters, assuring that investigators would pursue all responsible.
Manzo’s killing sparked outrage across Mexico, with hundreds marching in Morelia to demand justice and an end to political violence.
