By Zoila Palma: The United States has mobilized emergency relief efforts following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in New Hope, Jamaica, on October 28 as a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 185 mph.
The hurricane caused extensive destruction across Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, leading to flooding, hospital evacuations, and multiple fatalities.
U.S. President Trump authorized an immediate federal response, directing the U.S. Department of State to coordinate aid for affected communities.
Within hours, Secretary Rubio deployed a regional Disaster Assistance Response Team, including urban search-and-rescue personnel, to support emergency operations.
The U.S. State Department said that it is working alongside UN agencies, NGOs, and host governments to deliver food, water, medical supplies, hygiene kits, temporary shelter, and search-and-recovery assistance across the hardest-hit areas.
U.S. officials emphasized that financial contributions remain the most effective form of public support in disaster recovery efforts.
Donations to established humanitarian organizations allow for the rapid purchase of essential goods locally, which reduces costs and speeds delivery.
The Government of Jamaica has also launched a relief coordination platform at supportjamaica.gov.jm
