Belize’s National Men’s Basketball Team etched their name into history on Wednesday afternoon, defeating hosts Guatemala 85–72 to claim the bronze medal at the XII Central American Games Guatemala 2025—the country’s first-ever medal in basketball at the Central American Games.

” declared the official tournament organizers on Facebook. “An achievement that solidifies the growth of basketball in Belize and leaves a lasting mark on the tournament.”
The win capped off a strong tournament for Belize, who had already beaten Guatemala 72–43 in group play. Though the hosts led 25–21 after the first quarter, Belize roared back with a dominant second period, outscoring Guatemala 31–14 to take a 52–39 halftime lead. They maintained control through the third quarter, leading 67–54 before sealing the 13-point victory.
Tevaughan Dawson delivered a monster performance, scoring 27 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and adding one assist. Jason Orosco backed him with 18 points and seven boards. Kelvin Cumberbatch and Euan Wade each scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, with Wade also contributing two assists. Ian Parham added eight points and six rebounds, while Captain Devin Moody and Michael Caceres chipped in six points apiece. Moody also recorded seven rebounds.
Guatemala’s César Catalán led all scorers with 34 points and seven rebounds, but no other Guatemalan player reached double figures.

Belize had earned their semifinal berth by topping Group B with a perfect 3–0 record:
Saturday, October 25: Belize 83–68 El Salvador- Sunday, October 26: Belize 72–43 Guatemala
- Monday, October 27: Belize 93–47 Honduras
They fell 82–74 to Panama in Tuesday’s semifinal, while Guatemala were defeated 93–73 by Nicaragua.
Panama and Nicaragua will meet in the gold medal match at 8:00pm Wednesday.

The Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association celebrated the team’s achievement:

With four wins from five games, Belize’s basketball team not only secured a podium finish but also left a lasting mark on regional basketball.
