By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 39-year-old Belize City landlord who said he acted out of heartbreak was fined and ordered to pay compensation after damaging a woman’s vehicle to the tune of over $1,000 when he discovered that she already had a boyfriend.

Michael Buckley, a landlord of Vernon Street, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 on Tuesday afternoon, where he pleaded guilty to a single charge of damage to property. He admitted to smashing his bicycle into the windshield of a Nissan Frontier belonging to the woman he thought was his girlfriend, causing $900 in damages.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 27, 2025. Buckley told the court that he believed he was in a relationship with the woman, but later found out she was involved with someone else.

“I invested in her,” Buckley said. “She told me she was living with her mother in Orange Walk, but it turned out she had a boyfriend. This is a learning process for me. I will move on.”

In delivering her sentence, the Senior Magistrate considered both mitigating and aggravating factors. She noted that Buckley had no previous convictions and accepted responsibility early, but also pointed out that his act was unprovoked and cautioned that Buckley’s behavior could not be excused.

Buckley was fined $305, including court costs, and ordered to pay $900 in compensation to the complainant. He was given until December 31, 2025, to pay the fine or face two months’ imprisonment in default. The compensation must be paid by April 30, 2026, or it will be subject to distress.

Buckley, who was unrepresented in court, told the magistrate he intends to learn from the experience and move on with his life.
