By Zoila Palma: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has unveiled Grokipedia, a new crowdsourced online encyclopedia designed to compete directly with Wikipedia.
Announcing the launch on social media, Musk declared that the platform — now live at Grokipedia.com — aims to present “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
The project stems from his ongoing criticism of Wikipedia, which he has accused of spreading “propaganda” and operating with political bias. Musk first revealed in September that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, was developing the alternative platform.
At first glance, Grokipedia has a minimalist interface featuring only a search bar and access to roughly 885,000 articles, compared to Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language entries, AP reports.
While users can search for similar topics — from pop culture to global history — questions remain about how Grokipedia’s content is generated.
Early reports suggest it uses xAI’s Grok chatbot to compile and summarize information, with some entries appearing to have been adapted from Wikipedia. However, unlike Wikipedia, where volunteer editors must cite reliable sources, many Grokipedia articles appear lightly referenced, raising questions about transparency and editorial oversight.
Notably, Grokipedia includes a critical entry about Wikipedia itself, accusing the long-running encyclopedia of harboring “systemic ideological biases” and favoring left-leaning narratives.
The launch comes amid broader political scrutiny of online information sources, with U.S. lawmakers recently probing alleged manipulation of Wikipedia’s editorial process and its influence on AI training data.
