By Zoila Palma: Global shipping giant UPS announced plans to cut 20,000 jobs this year as part of a major cost-cutting initiative tied to its decision to handle fewer shipments from Amazon, its largest customer.
The layoffs, which represent just over 4% of the company’s 490,000-person workforce, come alongside plans to close 73 facilities by mid-2025 as UPS consolidates its operations to improve efficiency and profitability, CBS reports.
During an earnings call on Tuesday, UPS Chief Financial Officer Brian Dykes said the restructuring will help “expand our U.S. Domestic operating margin and increase profitability,” estimating savings of $3.5 billion this year.
The company’s move follows an agreement made in January with Amazon to reduce delivery volume by more than 50% by late 2026. UPS stated that the decision was voluntary and part of a strategy to prioritize “revenue quality” over sheer volume. Despite this, the Teamsters Union warned UPS not to violate its labor contract, which requires the company to create 30,000 union jobs under its current national agreement.
While Amazon emphasized that it maintains a “strong working relationship” with UPS and had even offered to increase shipping volumes, both companies acknowledged that the delivery reduction was mutually agreed upon.
The announcement comes amid growing global trade tensions and new tariffs that UPS says could affect its international business.
