By Zoila Palma: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters are currently investigating the powerful Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, which is bearing down on Jamaica with devastating winds, life-threatening storm surge, and catastrophic flooding expected to intensify throughout the day and into tonight.
As of 8:00 a.m, the distinct eye of Hurricane Melissa was located approximately 135 miles (220 km) southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and about 320 miles (515 km) southwest of Guantánamo, Cuba.
The monster storm is moving west at just 3 mph (6 km/h) but is expected to make a gradual turn toward the northwest and north later today before accelerating northeastward on Tuesday.
According to NOAA’s latest forecast, Melissa’s core is projected to move near or directly over Jamaica tonight and into Tuesday morning, then sweep across southeastern Cuba Tuesday night before reaching the southeastern Bahamas on Wednesday.
Reconnaissance aircraft have measured maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h), with even stronger gusts — confirming Melissa as a Category 5 hurricane, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Forecasters warn that some additional strengthening is possible before landfall.
Meteorologists caution that Melissa could deliver sustained destructive winds, intense rainfall, and widespread flooding.
