Press Release

The Ministry of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs, and Transportation announces Cabinet’s approval of a decisive plan to enhance public safety and modernize Belize’s transport infrastructure, with the implementation of key legislative amendments expected by November 2025. This action underscores the Government’s commitment to protecting lives, improving service delivery, and investing in the future of national mobility.

  1. Legislative Reforms for Safer Roads
  2. Motorcycle Safety: Mandatory training and certification for all motorcycle users (Class D driver’s licence applicants), directly addressing the alarming increase in motorcycle accidents and fatalities across Belize.
  3. Impaired Driving: Strengthening laws for the use of breathalyzers to modernize enforcement against drunk driving.
  4. Tinted Windows: Regulating tinted vehicles to enhance visibility and public safety.
  5. Fair Trade: Amending regulations for transport at border points to ensure equity for Belizean commercial truck operators.
  6. Dealer Licensing: Clarifying the Dealer’s General Licence to include both motor vehicles and motorcycles, and establishing a distinct licensing regime for motorcycle dealers and repairs.
  7. Local Governance: Amending Caye Caulker regulations to empower the Village Council with legal authority to collect traffic fees for road maintenance and community services.

Each reform is designed to make Belize’s roads safer, strengthen accountability, and ensure fairer opportunities for all operators.

  1. Capital Investments in Modern Terminals

Cabinet also approved BZ$2 million for the urgent rehabilitation of the Belize City (Pound Yard) and Belmopan Bus Terminals. This investment ensures that terminal facilities meet national standards for safety, accessibility, and human dignity, improving the daily experience of commuters and operators alike.

III. Operational Strengthening for Enforcement

For the first time, thirty-five officers from the Department of Transport have commenced a three-week intensive traffic enforcement training at the Belize Police Department’s National Police Training Academy. The joint initiative between the Ministry of Transportation and the Belize Police Department aims to strengthen officers’ knowledge of national traffic laws, enhance enforcement techniques, and improve overall road safety and compliance.

The Ministry of Transportation remains steadfast in driving change that will save lives, strengthen national infrastructure, and ensure every Belizean travels with dignity and safety.
