By Zoila Palma: Mexico has extradited Zhi Dong Zhang, an alleged Chinese fentanyl trafficker, to the United States, where he faces charges of money laundering and large-scale drug trafficking, according to Mexican National Security Minister Omar García Harfuch.
Zhang, also known as “Brother Wang,” is accused of operating an international network that moved over 1,800 kilograms of fentanyl and 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, while laundering more than US$150 million in illicit profits annually.
According to CNN, police say his operations spanned the U.S., Central America, Europe, China, and Japan, with alleged ties to Mexican criminal organizations.
Zhang was initially arrested in Mexico in October 2024 and placed under house arrest while awaiting extradition proceedings.
However, he escaped custody on July 11 before being recaptured in Cuba with the assistance of Cuban authorities. “Today he was handed over to the United States authorities,” García Harfuch announced Thursday, expressing gratitude to Cuba for its “valuable cooperation” in the case.
The extradition comes amid heightened U.S.–China tensions over the global fentanyl crisis.
Washington has long accused Beijing of failing to stem the flow of precursor chemicals used in producing the synthetic opioid, which is now a leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said fentanyl will top his agenda when he meets Chinese President Xi Jinping next week during his Asia trip.
