Belize’s Women’s National Volleyball Team made history at the XII Central American Games, not only by securing the country’s first-ever volleyball medal but also by celebrating individual excellence—Nelissa Ramirez was named Best Scorer of the tournament, capping off a landmark campaign with national pride.
Ramirez’s scoring prowess was on full display throughout the championship, powering Belize through the group stage and into the medal rounds. Her consistent offensive contributions helped Belize top Group B with victories over Honduras (3–1), Guatemala (3–2), and Panama (3–0), before falling to Nicaragua in the semi-finals.
In the bronze medal match, Belize defeated archrivals Guatemala 3–1 (25–13, 25–19, 14–25, 25–21) at the Gimnasio Teodoro Palacios Flores in Guatemala City. The win marked Belize’s first podium finish in women’s volleyball at the regional Games. Led by Gareth Bruce, Herdie Castillo, and libero Kaleigh Cardinez, the team delivered a spirited performance, dominating early and regrouping after a third-set setback to seal the match in four.
Ramirez’s Best Scorer award places her among the region’s elite, joining a distinguished list of honourees that reflects the depth of talent across Central America. MVP Tatiana Sayles (Costa Rica) also earned 2nd Best Spiker, while Guatemala’s María Santa Cruz claimed 1st Best Spiker. Panama’s Sofía Centella and El Salvador’s Evelyn Ramírez were recognized as 1st and 2nd Best Blockers, respectively. Costa Rica’s Yuliana González was named Best Setter, and her teammate Ana Victoria Rojas earned dual honours as Best Opposite and Best Server. Defensive specialist María José Castro, also from Costa Rica, took home Best Libero and Best Receiver, showcasing her consistency and versatility in the backcourt. Panama’s Ruth Rivas was awarded Best Digger.
The full slate of individual awards reflects the depth of talent across Central America, but Ramirez’s achievement stands out as a milestone for Belizean volleyball.
Congratulations to Nelissa Ramirez and Team Belize for a historic campaign filled with resilience, teamwork, and national pride.
