By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Tropical Storm Melissa continues to churn slowly over the central Caribbean Sea, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding to parts of Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
As of this morning, Melissa was located near latitude 14.3°N and longitude 73.5°W, moving west-northwest at around 7 mph with maximum sustained winds near 50 mph. Forecasters say the storm could dump several inches of rain across the Greater Antilles through the weekend, increasing the risk of flash flooding and landslides, especially in hilly and mountainous areas.
A Hurricane Watch remains in effect for the southwestern peninsula of Haiti, while a Tropical Storm Watch is active for Jamaica. The NHC urges residents in those regions to complete all storm preparations by Thursday and to closely follow official updates.
Meteorologists caution that there is still considerable uncertainty in Melissa’s future track and intensity, and conditions could change quickly as the storm continues its slow movement over warm Caribbean waters.
For now, Belize remains outside of Melissa’s projected path, and the National Meteorological Service has confirmed that the system poses no immediate threat to the country. However, forecasters continue to monitor its progress for any potential shift westward.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, the NHC reports no new tropical systems are expected to develop over the next seven days.
